The Catcher in the Rye is about a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield who doesn’t exactly fit in with his society. We know he doesn’t fit it because in the first scene Holden decides not to attend his school’s football game, which most people attend. Holden is a very opinionated person who criticizes most things. Hold did not belong in the 1940’s idea of a perfect society. But, would Holden Caulfield fit in to today’s society? Holden Caulfield would be more critical of today’s society. Holden would have many more prejudices today, but would still be accepted into today’s society because of a diversified society from the 1950’s to the 2010’s. The internet provides a place, such as blogs and websites, to express how they feel. Holden would not have been alone, if he was alive today. Holden would be more accepting living in the current generation. He would be more critical of modern society. When asked to name one thing he likes by Phoebe, he can not think of anything. Holden Caulfield likes to have prejudices against people. So even if they criticisms he made in 1946 were not relevant today, he would find more problems to address. However, many of the opinions he held would be seen in today’s society, so Holden would be critical of his 1946 views and today’s 2014 views. Today, there are many ways for your voice to be heard. Holden, with access to these resources, would not have been alone and seemed so disturbed by society. He would be able to connect with others who felt the same way he did about certain topics. With this group of criticizers, Holden might be able to feel included in a group and not feel so distant from society. Holden Caulfield is definitely and alienated teenager. This alienation harms and protects Holden. By being alienated fro m society, he does not have to connect with people and therefore, people can not reject him.
